New FTC Guidelines
New FTC Guidelines
What do the new FTC guidlines mean for you as an affiliate.
Well in general what the changes mean are that if you endorse a product or recommend a product on your site and earn money for doing so, then you must state this. These changes are meant to protect consumers from sellers who are selling a product that is way over hyped / priced, and under delivering. It is also to stop affiliates from giving false testimonials only because they know they will make big commissions on sales for doing so.
So as an affiliate you should:
# 1 drop any products or services that you know are over priced / hyped and under deliver. Only deal with products or services that you know are well worth the money charged, and that customers are getting what they pay for and more.
#2 State that you will make a commission if they buy the product that you are endorsing. The important thing here is that you do this creatively. You do not need to blurt out that “If you buy this product I make money”. Do it so that it fits with the style of your site. Also you should reference the actual new guidelines to determine the minimum size font and font colors that can be used. Obviously you can’t use white font on white background, or use 1pt font etc.
This article is not meant to be a replacement for the FTC Guidelines but merely point out some of the more pertinent info to Affiliates. If you are an Affiliate you should read the FTC guidelines and completely understand your obligations. When the hammer comes down (and it will) you don’t want to be the one under it.
